Northerners Taking Action on Climate Change

Northerners are concerned about Climate Change.  Our climate and weather are changing faster than many other parts of the world.  We know that burning fossil fuels like heating oil, diesel and gasoline will make the climate change even faster.

Going Carbon Neutral means that you take responsibility for all your greenhouse gas emissions.  There are 3 steps:

If you are an individual, business/institution or community in the Northwest Territories, the Arctic Energy Alliance has programs to help with Steps 1 and 2.

Step 3 starts here.

Click on the Carbon Neutral North logo to calculate your emissions.

Calculate your emissions from driving, flying or your home or building in a few simple steps, and purchase offsets online to neutralize them.

The renewable and energy efficiency projects you will be supporting prevent as much greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere as you have released.  We provide you with carbon offsets through a partnership with Planetair, a non-profit organization based in Montreal, Canada.  Planetair is one of Canada's most trusted offset providers, and the only one to offer Gold Standard offsets, which adhere to the most widely accepted quality seal for voluntary offsets currently available.

There are a confusing number of different companies and organizations selling carbon credits and offsets these days and it is not always clear where your money is going.  This website provides a good overview of the different companies and even has maps showing where the money goes.

When you purchase Carbon Offset Credits through Planetair, your money is being to used to fund a variety of renewable energy projects all over the globe. Planetair is involved in the establishment of Wind Farms in India and Madagascar, micro hydropower plants in Indonesia and many other projects that encourage renewable energy in places where it is most needed.

Below is map showing the various places around the world Planetair funds energy projects using proceeds from the purchase of Carbon Offset Credits.

How the AEA Became Carbon Neutral

The Alliance first became interested in going Carbon Neutral in the Fall of 2007. With some time and calculation, we discovered that our employees had flown over 78 500 km and driven 12 000 km in just the previous year. This produced roughly 21.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Furthermore, the portion of the building our offices occupy produced over 20.8 tonnes of emissions. In total, we were directly responsible for 42.6 tonnes of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere.

Using Planetair's calculators, we ascertained that in order to offset these emissions we had to purchase $1,450 worth of Gold Standard Carbon Offsets. And so we did.

As of 2007, the Arctic Energy Alliance has become a carbon neutral organization.  We purchased 42.6 tonnes of Gold Standard Carbon Credits to offset our 2007 emissions.
