Keeping warm & saving money with a woodstove!

Susan Peffer of Inuvik is enjoying the comfort, security and savings that come from heating a home with a high efficiency wood stove – courtesy of the Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA)!

Susan was the winner of the AEA’s draw prize at the Inuvik Petroleum Show last year. She reports that she is burning less home-heating fuel and that has lowered her fuel costs.

“The last time I purchased heating fuel was in the middle of December 2010,” Susan told Donald Andre, the AEA’s Inuvik Regional Energy Project Coordinator.

“The wood stove heats the whole house and I’m very happy with it. When my friends come over they often comment that it’s just like being out on the land,” says Susan.

Katimavik youth winterize Yellowknife buildings

Katimavik volunteers in Yellowknife worked with Ecology North and the Climate Justice Collective to take action on climate change as part of an internationally coordinated event called “10-10-10.”

They winterized the Katimavik house and the Centre for Northern Families in Yellowknife by putting plastic on windows, and covering up plugs. Done properly, these actions can cut the fuel used for heating a home or building by about 10 per cent.

The Katimavik youth also become active composters after a workshop with Shannon Ripley at Ecology North. They took these skills to Olds, Alberta where they finished their project.

City of YK honours AEA Executive Director

Yellowknife City Councillor Mark Heyck, above left, presents AEA Executive Director Andrew Robinson with a plaque in recognition of Andrew's years of service on the Community Energy Planning (CEP) Committee.

Andrew worked on the original CEP committee from 2005 to 2006 when he was AEA's Community Energy Planning Coordinator, and then joined the Community Energy Plan Implementation Committee in 2007 after becoming the Executive Director of AEA.

“Andrew was instrumental in guiding the original CEP committee through the process of assembling the City's plan,” says Mark. Since the CEP was adopted in late 2006, Andrew has taken an active role in ensuring that the plan remains on track and that the City is moving forward in implementing the plan's various recommendations.

Charlie Cameron-Sills enjoys a fishing trip powered by an energy efficient and environmentally friendly four-stroke outboard motor.

Four stroke motor = More enjoyable fishing trips!

Barb Cameron of Yellowknife bought a Tohatsu 9.8 HP outboard motor from TLC Marine during summer 2010 and received a $250 rebate because her new motor is CARB-3 certified . She will also save money by purchasing less gas, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and be able to go farther before refueling.

“When my mom switched to four-stroke outboard motors it gave us both a positive edge to our Great Slave Lake fishing trips – not only for better fuel economy but also because I learned it’s absolutely better for the lake environment," says Charlie Cameron-Sills.  "That means me and my mom will be enjoying our fishing trips a whole lot more!”

John Ross's ENERGY STAR fridge will save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Hay River couple's energy wise home is saving money while reducing greenhouse gas emissions!

John and Leila Ross of Hay River recently received a $100 rebate for their new energy efficient, ENERGY STAR fridge as well as the long-term savings on their electric bills.

They are proud to have an energy wise home with an on-demand hot water tank with solar backup as well as high efficiency washer and dryer.

Great job saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions Jon and Leila!

Mike Belanger stands in front of his house in this “After” picture.

Yellowknife resident improves home’s energy efficiency by 40 per cent!

Mike Belanger of Yellowknife was one of 10 Northerners nominated for a 2009 Energy Action Award in the Individual Category.

Although Mike wasn’t selected to receive an Energy Action Award, he’s still a winner because the actions he took to upgrade his home are resulting in significant energy savings – which translates into dollars saved each and every year.

Mike upgraded his house from EGH 33 to EGH 74. What does that mean? An EnerGuide for Houses (EGH) evaluation rates a house from 0 to 100. Poor houses that waste energy are rated 50 or below while good, energy efficient houses rate near 80.

Mike improved his EGH rating by making the following home improvements:

• Added R30 to the attic using two crisscrossed layers of Pink Insulation (3.5" and 5.5") for a total value of R50.

• Added R10 value to all basement and main house walls using 2" rigid foam Insulation for a total value of R22.

• Replaced five windows with triple planes double Low-e argon, ENERGY STAR Zone D rated ones. The remaining windows in the house were reused as they had already been replaced with more energy efficient models in previous years.

• Replaced two exterior doors with insulated metal models.

• Added new house wrap / weather barrier to the whole house to dramatically increase the air sealing properties.

These improvements also made Mike’s home more comfortable by drastically lowering his air leakage rate from 23.3 AEH (air exchanges per hour) to 2.78 AEH.

By improving his EGH rating by more than 40 per cent, Mike has also reduced his reduced his greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Mike’s results were much better than he originally predicted and he credits the difference to the fact that he did the work himself. “No one can be as picky on details and dedicated to perfection on your home than the owner!” says Mike.

Want to know how you can make your home more energy efficient? Sign up for a Home Energy Evaluation and the AEA’s Certified Energy Advisors will give your home an EGH rating and recommend upgrades that will save you energy and money, and reduce your GHG emissions.

A Home Energy Evaluation costs only $150 (plus GST) and you can sign up for an evaluation on the Arctic Energy Alliance’s website.

For more information, phone 920-3333 in Yellowknife or toll free 1-877-755-5855 from anywhere else in the NWT. You can also contact us by e-mail

Norman Wells resident installs on-demand oil hot water heater

In February 2010, Philip Spencer of Norman Wells replaced his electric hot water heater with an on-demand oil hot water heater. It only heats water as needed rather than using energy to store hot water, and is 88% efficient.

Phillip received an $800 rebate as well as saving money on his electricity bill and reducing his greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

Philip also installed a low flow toilet in April 2010 and received a $75 rebate. In May 2010 he purchased an ENERGY STAR© clothes washer and refrigerator for which he also received rebates.

Great job saving energy and money as well as reducing GHGs, Philip!

Brother Edouard Prince: An advocate for energy efficiency in Lutselk'e

Brother Edouard Prince of Lutselk’e was nominated for a 2009 Energy Action Award in the Individual Category because of his interest in energy conservation.

Edourard’s expertise as a builder and mechanical installer are evident in the renovations he has done on several Church properties including his residence and a community hall. His renovations have utilized high levels of insulation, high efficiency heating, and he is trying to incorporate solar water heating as well.

Edouard is also indispensible to the community as a furnace repair man. He is constantly on call to keep furnaces running and seems to answer these calls tirelessly.  Several years ago, AEA was trying to promote flue gas testing as part of furnace servicing.  The AEA assisted Edouard in getting parts for his analyzer (an older model) which he uses in his pro bono furnace tune-ups.

Edouard’s dream is to open a small school in Lutselk’e to teach young people carpentry and mechanical skills that will benefit them and their community in their efforts at sustainability.”

Dan O'Neill applies new siding to his home.

Renovations make YK home warmer, more energy efficient

Dan O’Neill and Dorothy Westerman of Yellowknife are enjoying a warmer home – and reaping the financial benefits that come with a more energy efficient house.

Dan was one of 10 people nominated for a 2009 Energy Action Award in the Individuals Category for his work in the summer of 2009 to completely renovate their home.

Dan worked side-by-side with Larry Roche of Summit Constructors of Fort Simpson on renovations that included new low flush toilets, all new windows, siding, additional insulation in the walls, attic and crawl space, and new vapour barrier.

After completing two Home Energy Evaluations (one before and one after the renovations) Dan qualified for a Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) grant. He was also eligible for the federal government’s homeowner energy tax rebate in 2009.

“In this cold Northern climate, we think energy efficiency is very important and the work done on house was well worth the effort,” says Dan.

Robert & Sue Hawkins with their wood pellet boiler

Yellowknife family improving their energy efficiency –– one step at a time

One of the perceived barriers to Northerners making their homes more energy efficient is the cost of renovations.

The Hawkins family of Yellowknife is overcoming that “barrier” by making their home and their lives more energy efficient – one step at a time.

“It’s a personal lifestyle choice,” says Robert Hawkins. “We’re trying to make the right choices whenever we can because, as a family, we believe we can do things better.”

Some of the steps the Hawkins family has taken over the past few years include:

  • purchasing a hybrid vehicle,
  • installing a wood pellet boiler and a wood pellet stove,
  • replacing toilets with dual or low flush models,
  • replacing old appliances with Energy Star appliances,
  • installing programmable thermostats and setting them to cycle with household activity,
  • adding four to six inches of interior insulation throughout their home,
  • adding insulation to their attic as well as exterior Styrofoam, and
  • changing 95 per cent of their light bulbs to CFLs.

“We don’t have the money to do everything at once, so we’re doing it in stages. These improvements are all doable – if you build them into a household plan,” says Robert.

He adds that becoming more energy efficient is providing their household with “noticeable savings” as well as helping to teach their children, McKinley and Hudson, the wisdom of conserving resources.

“Our kids are part of our household recycling and composting effort and we’re trying to show them that you shouldn’t waste, and that you should only use what you need.

Robert says future energy efficiency plans for their home include researching solar power as both a means of supplementing their power supply but also as a back-up source of energy during short but cold winter power outages.

Inuvik “Dream home’’ one of the most energy-efficient in the NWT!

Little did Vince Sharpe of Inuvik know when he built his dream
home on Shell Lake Road that it would be one of the most energy efficient homes in the NWT, reports Northern News Services Ltd.

An energy efficiency evaluation by the Arctic Energy Alliance shows the house has an EnerGuide rating of 80.

Yellowknife couple building first LEED home North of 60

Dwayne Wohlgemuth and Mary Kelly of Yellowknife are building the first house North of 60 to be accredited with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, reports Northern News Services Ltd. Dwayne said their goals in building the house were to: grow most of their own food; keep the trees around the house; build small; achieve EGH 85.5; obtain LEED Platinum, and have a house close to work and services. "We didn't want just a typical house," he said. "We wanted a small house that is energy efficient and has good air quality and one that is durable and going to last a long time."

Arctic Energy Alliance salutes Inuvik’s one-and-only hybrid SUV taxi driver

Russell Noksana, the Arctic Energy Alliance’s Inuvik Regional Energy Pathfinder, recently interviewed Inuvik taxi driver Maung Win who drives a 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid – Inuvik’s only hybrid taxi.

1. Why did you buy your 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid? For the cost savings on fuel, and to reduce greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere. I’ve always wanted to promote more use of renewable energy.

2. So what kind of cost savings are you seeing now? An average fuel savings of 50 per cent, or $1,200 per month. That’s based on 250 kilometres per day during a 12-hour day. On average, I fill up every four days or 700 kilometres – that’s compared to my old minivan which I filled up daily at $60 per day.

3. Has your business picked up since purchasing the hybrid? Yes, by 50 per cent. People want to know how the vehicle runs, and how much I save on gas and how many kilometres I can get on one tank of gas.

An article about Maung Win also appeared recently in the Inuvik Drum: Go To NNSL Article

Lefebvre family of Hay River

Brian Lefebvre of Hay River and his family are saving money and the environment by heating their home with wood pellets. They calculate it costs about $280 a month to heat their home with wood pellets in the winter with some auxiliary propane heat. That’s at least 35% less then when they heated only with propane – and the house is much more comfortable.

“We love our wood pellet stove and wouldn’t be without it,” says Brian. “We’re saving a tonne of money and we’re saving the environment. And we have not had a single issue with the stove in three years even though we run it 24/7 from September to April.”

Interested in wood pellet heat for your home for next winter? Contact the AEA’s energy professionals for advice and ask about rebates through the Energy Efficiency Incentive Program.

Kaad Mukhtaar

Kaad Mukhtaar was the first taxi driver to switch to a hybrid vehicle.  Kaad also assisted the Arctic Energy Alliance in the preparation of a Toyota Prius Case Study.

Sean Kollee, Yellowknife, NWT

Sean undertook a massive project: the construction of an eco-friendly home on Niven drive here in Yellowknife.  Using such methods as passive solar design, heat recovery ventilation and the installation of a solar water heater Sean has created a exemplary building which proves it is possible to combat high heating bills and reduce our carbon imprint in the Arctic.  Visit his website to learn more about the project.

How can I do that?

Although it  is outside the grasp of many to build such a home, most of the techniques Sean used to insure his construction was as "green" as possible can be applied around the household if on a somewhat less grandiose scale.  Visit our Tips for Individuals section to learn more.
