Energy Management Specialist in Training
The Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) is a not-for-profit organization, established in 1997 to help communities, consumers, producers, regulators and policy makers to work together to reduce the costs of environmental impacts of energy and utility services in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The AEA is supported by various territorial departments and agencies, and does some fee for service work in the private sector. The AEA is currently recruiting an Energy Management Specialist in Training.
The Energy Management Specialist in Training at the Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) provides technical expertise in the areas of energy efficiency and renewable energy to AEA clients as well as other AEA staff. As an important member of the AEA team, the Energy Management Specialist in Training supports the delivery of AEA programs and services – specific activities will vary depending on which programs and services AEA is delivering.
This position is located in Yellowknife, but may also involve some travel to NWT communities. Under the direction of a Technical Advisor and in cooperation with other team members, the Energy management Specialist in Training is responsible for the following:
Providing expert advice and knowledge on current “northern best practices” in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency to AEA clients,
• Conducting building energy “Yardsticks” by analyzing fuel use and electricity consumption,
• Conducting residential energy evaluations (if trained) to use HOT2000,
• Doing pre-feasibility studies of potential renewable energy projects using RETScreen software – or equivalent,
• Researching current best “northern best practices” in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency,
• Monitoring and reporting on the performance of renewable energy and energy efficiency demonstration projects in the NWT,
• Networking with other renewable energy and energy efficiency organizations in Canada and abroad in order to keep up to date on current best practices,
• Managing demonstration projects in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency,
• Supporting the AEA team in writing educational materials, creating workshops and maintaining the technical content of the AEA website,
• Supporting the AEA team in writing proposals and applications for funding,
• Supporting the AEA team in reporting back to clients and funding agencies,
• Supporting other members of the AEA team as directed,
• Additional activities that may be assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
• Demonstrated Proficiency of Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook are required,
• 2 completed years of an undergraduate degree in engineering or an equivalent science degree or an equivalent college education with related work experience is required,
• An ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing is required,
• An ability to work with the public and co-workers in a respectful and professional manner is required,
• An ability to assume responsibility without direct supervision, to make decisions, exercise initiative and judgement, prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines while working within a team environment is required,
• Proficiency in RETScreen, HOMER, HOT2000, EE4 or equivalent energy modelling software is preferred,
• A strong personal interest in energy and climate change issues is preferred,
• Ability to speak, write or understand any of the NWT’s official languages in addition to English would be an asset,
• Work experience in a related technical position would be an asset.

The AEA offers an attractive salary range of $30.00 - $33.00/per hour depending on qualifications and experience. AEA also offers a competitive benefits package.
