EnerGuide
The EnerGuide Program is a Natural Resources Canada Program to help consumers purchase the most energy efficient equipment on the market. AEA advisors can assist you with advise of efficiency of existing equipment and advise alternatives available to you .  A Borrow a Kill-A-Watt Meter™ (see next paragraph) will help determine current energy consumption. When purchasing a new product, look for the International Energy Star Symbol to indicate energy efficiency rating. The Government of the Northwest Territories is currently providing NWT residents with an Energy Efficiency Incentive Program grant when replacing energy consuming products with Energy Star products.

Borrow a Kill-A-Watt Meter™
Have you ever wondered just how much power one of your appliances is using? The AEA has a number of kilowatt meters for the public to take home and monitor energy use within your home. You simply unplug the appliance, plug the meter into the outlet and then plug the appliance into the meter. An easy-to-read digital display tells you how many kilowatt-hours that appliance uses, and from that information you can determine how much money it's costing you. Kill-A-Watt meters are also available at Local Housing Offices. A $25 refundable deposit is required: cash or cheque.

Kill Your Phantoms
A phantom load is found in appliances that consume electricity when just plugged in to your electrical outlet, they do not have to be turned on.  Entertainment centers, TV's, stereos, VCR's all have phantom loads. Some will consume up to 35 watts, 24hrs./day 365 days/year. That equals over 300kWh per year! So, plug as many of your electronics as possible into a power strip and then turn it off when they are not in use. Go to Stand-by Power in our Energy Tips Section for more information.
